Balay dryer: full tank error although it is empty

The tank is empty, but the warning remains: these checks help locate the fault without dismantling the appliance.

When a Balay dryer indicates that the tank is full although the drawer is empty, the problem is usually in the condensed-water drainage circuit, not in the container. A bent hose, a pump blocked by lint or a stuck float can stop the cycle to prevent overflow.

If you have a problem with your dryer, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

Why the warning appears with an empty tank

In Balay condenser and heat-pump models, the water extracted from clothes ends up in an upper tank or is sent directly to the drain. Before reaching it, the water passes through a lower area where fibers, detergent residue and damp dirt can accumulate. This mixture forms a paste that restricts water flow.

The system includes a pump and a level sensor, usually linked to a float. If the pump cannot move the water or the float remains raised by debris, the electronics interpret the situation as a full tank. Emptying the drawer therefore does not always clear the warning: the blockage may be below, away from the visible area.

Safe checks before looking for a fault

Switch off the dryer, unplug it and remove the tank. Check that it is not cracked and clean its accessible channels. Then inspect the rear hose, if fitted, because a tight bend or pressure against the wall can stop circulation. It is also worth cleaning the lint filter after every cycle and removing fibers from the slot where the filter fits.

On a dryer connected directly to a drain, temporarily disconnect the hose and check that it is not blocked. On machines with a manual tank, push the drawer fully back into place; poor seating can prevent the sensor from detecting its position. After these checks, leave the appliance unplugged for about 20 minutes and try a short program with a small load.

Do not insert metal objects, use pressurized water or pour harsh products into the lower openings. The pump and wiring are nearby, and forceful cleaning can push lint into deeper areas. If the warning returns immediately, inspecting the pump, float or sensor requires partial dismantling and should be carried out by a technician.

Other symptoms that help locate the fault

When the machine stops after a few minutes and leaves clothes damp, the condensate circuit is the first suspect. A brief humming sound without water movement points to a blocked or worn pump. If water can be heard in the lower section but the tank remains dry, an internal hose may be disconnected or partly obstructed.

Air maintenance also matters. A clogged filter or dirty heat exchanger reduces performance, lengthens the cycle and creates more condensation inside. In heat-pump models, the exchanger fins are delicate: clean them with gentle suction and avoid bending them. Specific codes such as E01 or E60 depend on the series and should not be interpreted identically without checking the model manual.

When repairing a Balay dryer is worthwhile

Cleaning filters and ducts is usually a simple intervention, while replacing a condensate pump may cost approximately 100 to 200 euros, depending on the model and labor. Replacing an electronic board or a heat-pump compressor can exceed 300 euros, so the appliance’s age and overall condition should be considered.

A burning smell, an overheated plug, smoke, repeated circuit-breaker trips or an excessively hot cabinet are reasons to stop using the appliance and unplug it. A tank warning that remains after cleaning accessible parts does not necessarily mean the dryer has reached the end of its life, but the diagnosis must go beyond emptying the drawer.

A small warning that reveals the condition of the whole machine

The full-tank message acts as an early alarm: it often appears when dirt has already moved through the condensation system. Keeping the filter clean, checking the heat exchanger periodically and avoiding an overloaded drum reduce pump strain and improve drying. Prevention is far cheaper than an electronic repair and also avoids endless cycles and unnecessary energy use.
