Error 22 on a Balay induction hob: causes and solution
The E22 code may have a simple cause, but it can also reveal an electronic fault requiring professional diagnosis.

The E22 code on a Balay induction hob usually appears when the system detects moisture, a problem with the touch panel or an internal electronic fault. It does not always mean that the hob is permanently damaged, but it should be treated carefully: water and power electronics are a dangerous combination.

What the E22 error means on a Balay hob
The exact interpretation may vary according to the model and the electronic version installed. On different Balay appliances, the warning is associated with an abnormal detection in the touch controls or with an internal control-module problem. A spill, condensed steam, overly wet cleaning or a power-supply issue can trigger it.
The error may also appear after cooking with a boiling pot near the controls, particularly when steam settles beneath the glass or reaches sensitive areas. For that reason, E22 should not automatically be confused with a permanent fault or a cookware problem: induction may misread an instruction when the panel is wet or operating outside normal conditions.
How to clear the E22 code safely
Switch the hob off using its controls and remove any cookware. Clean the surface with a completely dry soft cloth, paying attention to the sensor area. Then disconnect the power at the electrical panel for at least 10 minutes. Pressing the off button is not always enough, because some components retain a charge for a while.
Once the hob is cool and dry, reconnect the circuit and test one zone with induction-compatible cookware. If the warning disappears, the cause was probably temporary moisture or an incorrect panel reading. Even so, avoid covering the worktop, blocking ventilation openings or immediately cooking with large amounts of steam.
Do not dismantle the hob to dry it internally, apply electronic cleaners or expose it to sunlight or direct heat. These practices can damage seals, sensors and circuit boards, while also creating an electric-shock hazard. Internal work should be left to a qualified technician, with the power disconnected and the proper checks performed.
When E22 suggests an internal fault
If the code returns as soon as the appliance is switched on, remains after the reset or always affects the same zones, surface moisture is no longer the most likely explanation. In that situation, there may be a fault in the power module, touch panel, wiring or communication between electronic boards.
It is also important to note whether the circuit breaker trips, there is a smell of burnt components, clicking sounds, uneven heating or controls that respond without being touched. Any of these signs requires disconnecting the hob and stopping further tests. The glass may look undamaged while the fault is located in a component underneath.
The manual for the specific model is essential because Balay uses codes and procedures that are not identical throughout its range. Keep the full hob reference available, usually found in the documentation or on an accessible label after removing the drawer, but do not lift or open the appliance. With that information, technical support can identify the precise meaning of E22 and decide whether an inspection or module replacement is needed.
A warning worth interpreting, not ignoring
A reset may restore normal operation, but it does not make a recurring fault acceptable. The difference between a one-time incident and a persistent problem is frequency: if E22 returns with a dry surface and stable power supply, the responsible solution is professional diagnosis.
An induction hob relies on high-power electronics beneath a seemingly simple surface. That contradiction explains why a drop of water can cause a temporary warning and, at the same time, why an improvised repair can make the problem worse. Drying the surface, disconnecting the power and observing its behaviour are reasonable checks; opening the appliance is not.
