When a Balay hob stops responding to touch, shows an unexpected symbol or displays a warning such as E9, the cause is often the touch-control system, not necessarily the glass itself. Moisture, food residue, the child lock or an electrical interruption can prevent the sensors from detecting fingers correctly.

Why a Balay hob touch panel fails

Touch controls use capacitive sensors positioned beneath the glass. For that reason, a wet or dirty surface can interfere with detection: a drop beside the power button, built-up grease or a cloth resting on the panel may stop the hob from starting or make it beep. The glass must be completely dry and clear before any checks are made.

The safety lock may also be active. In that case, the indicators can light up, but the cooking zones will not respond. The method for switching it off depends on the model; it usually involves holding the padlock symbol or a combination shown in the manual for several seconds. Do not force other controls or remove the hob to solve the issue.

An E9 code, a partial display or a complete lack of response can indicate a power or control-electronics problem. The exact meaning depends on the hob’s full reference, such as 3EB917M, and its version. The same code does not always identify the same component, so the manual and appliance label are essential before buying parts or arranging a repair.

Safe checks before requesting service

Switch the hob off at its dedicated switch or at the electrical panel and wait a few minutes before restoring power. This reset can remove a temporary lock caused by a voltage fluctuation. If the hob is hot, let it cool completely; some systems restrict operation to protect internal components.

Then clean the panel with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it without leaving a film of water. Remove any cookware covering the controls and check that no liquid has entered around the glass edge. Do not use metal objects, sprays or abrasive scourers, as they can scratch the surface or introduce moisture into the electronics.

If the warning returns, a zone does not heat or the panel switches off intermittently, the fault may involve the power module, control board or its connections. Opening an induction hob involves high voltages and capacitors that can retain charge after disconnection. In that situation, the inspection should be carried out by a qualified technician, particularly if there is a burning smell, crackling, dark marks or repeated tripping of the breaker.

The exact model makes the difference

Balay is part of the BSH group and uses electronic platforms shared with other company appliances, but programming and codes vary between series. The full reference is printed on a label underneath the hob or in the purchase documents. Recording the visible code, the control behaviour and when the fault appears helps produce a more accurate diagnosis.

A touch hob that works again after drying and resetting may have suffered a temporary incident. However, a persistent error should not be concealed with repeated resets: it could eventually affect the power modules or leave a cooking zone without proper protection. Caution is more valuable than an improvised test here, because the perfect glass surface cannot reveal what is happening in the circuits beneath it.
