Low-Consumption Wi-Fi Electric Water Heaters: A Guide to Choosing Wisely
Capabilities, smart features, and real costs to help you choose an efficient, connected water heater.

A connected electric water heater can reduce unnecessary hot water costs, but only when it combines suitable capacity, good insulation, and programming consistent with the household’s schedule. Wi-Fi connectivity provides control from a mobile phone; real savings depend above all on the equipment’s efficiency and how it is used.
In the Spanish market, conventional models with ECO functions coexist with flat, dual-tank water heaters and hybrid heat pump systems. Reference prices range approximately from 150 to 380 euros for connected electric models, while 100-liter hybrid solutions are usually priced near 570 euros and can exceed 1,000 euros for larger capacities. The difference is not merely aesthetic: heating technology determines a substantial part of consumption throughout the equipment’s service life.

What it really means for a water heater to be energy-efficient
A storage water heater does not create hot water out of nowhere. It raises the temperature of the stored water using a heating element and then tries to preserve it inside an insulated tank. Whenever the water cools down, even if no one opens a tap, the appliance needs to supply energy to compensate for thermal losses. Therefore, the heating element’s power is not equivalent to total consumption: insulation, the programmed temperature, and the time the appliance remains switched on also matter.
Wi-Fi models usually include schedules, ECO modes, habit learning, and availability alerts. These functions make it possible to prevent the tank from operating all day, especially in second homes or properties with predictable routines. However, an app does not on its own turn a conventional water heater into a high-efficiency appliance. A 1,500-watt appliance may consume less on the bill than another rated at 2,000 watts if it heats only when necessary, but it will take longer to restore the temperature.
The energy label provides a useful reference, although it should not be interpreted in isolation. Classes A and B generally identify more efficient equipment within their category, but a large water heater may use more than a smaller one with a lower class simply because it heats and maintains more water. Comparing capacity, load profile, and estimated annual consumption is more reliable than looking only at the letter.
The right capacity changes the result more than Wi-Fi
Choosing the correct volume avoids two opposite mistakes. A small tank forces the water to be reheated frequently and may leave the household without hot water during consecutive showers. An excessively large one keeps liters that nobody uses, increases heat losses, and takes up considerable space. The usual guideline places 30-liter water heaters in homes occupied by one person with moderate consumption, 50-liter models for one or two people, 80-liter models for two or three, and 100-liter models for families of three or four members.
These figures are not a fixed rule. A short shower can use between 30 and 50 liters of mixed water, but the volume that comes out of the tank depends on the storage temperature and the temperature of the incoming cold water. In winter, when the water arrives colder, the same water heater provides fewer usable showers. The bathtub, simultaneous kitchen use, and the time between one shower and the next also play a role. The daily routine should carry more weight than the number of people in the household.
Flat, dual-tank water heaters make better use of narrow walls. The Ariston Velis Pro Wifi, available in 30-, 50-, 80-, and 100-liter versions, can be installed vertically or horizontally and operates with independent tanks. The manufacturer indicates heating times of around 46 minutes for some capacities, although the result varies according to the initial temperature and the selected mode. Its observed price ranges approximately from 240 to 379 euros, depending on the volume and the offer.
For a couple who shower separately and have limited space, 50 liters may be enough. In a family of four, 80 liters provide a more reasonable margin, while 100 liters reduce the risk of running out at the cost of greater size, weight, and standby consumption. The wall support must be calculated with the tank full: a 100-liter water heater can exceed 120 kilograms when the water, casing, and fittings are included.
The connected models that stand out for their balance
The Ariston Lydos Wifi represents the conventional vertical option with smart functions. It is offered in capacities of 50, 80, and 100 liters, includes app-based control, and uses the ECO EVO system to adapt heating to recorded habits. In the references consulted, the 50-liter model was around 169 euros and the 100-liter model around 259 euros. The Water Plus function is designed to extend hot water availability by delaying the mixing of cold and hot water.
Its main advantage is that it retains the classic format and offers relatively simple installation, with concealed hydraulic connections in certain versions. It does not provide the same space flexibility as a flat water heater, but it may be easier to integrate when there is a free vertical wall. It is a reasonable alternative for those seeking connectivity without entering the price range of aerothermal systems.
The Ariston Velis Tech Dry Wifi offers a higher level of protection against limescale and corrosion. Its 50- and 100-liter versions combine a dual tank, protected heating element, and electronic anode, a component that reduces the need for periodic replacement compared with traditional magnesium anodes. The observed price was approximately between 355 euros for 50 liters and 463 euros for 100 liters. It also offers multiposition installation and remote control through the manufacturer’s app.
COMFEE’s offering focuses on price and simplicity. The 80-liter vertical Wi-Fi model appeared at around 150 euros, with three heating modes, phone control, and compatibility with voice assistants. Its dual-tank construction in some versions promotes rapid recovery, but the availability of spare parts, local technical support, and warranty conditions should be checked before buying. A low initial price loses its appeal if installation or repairs prove difficult.
Haier offers 50- and 100-liter models with wireless connectivity and the option of vertical or horizontal installation. The ES100V-VH3W was around 219 euros in the references reviewed, with an enameled tank, a 310S stainless steel and molybdenum heating element, and a magnesium anode. It may suit homes that need installation flexibility, although it is advisable to verify the exact energy class on the relevant product sheet, because commercial names may vary by market.
The most efficient option: integrated heat pump
Hybrid water heaters and aerothermal systems for hot water do not work like traditional electric water heaters. Instead of directly converting all the electricity into heat through a heating element, they extract part of the thermal energy from the air and transfer it to the water. The heating element remains as backup for periods of high demand or to speed up recovery. This technology can significantly reduce consumption, but it requires a greater investment and more space.
The 100-liter Ariston Lydos Hybrid Wifi was offered at around 569 euros and listed with energy class A. It combines a mini heat pump with a heating element, habit learning, time scheduling, and app-based control. The manufacturer advertises savings of 50 percent compared with a traditional electric water heater, but the result depends on the room temperature, the volume of water used, and the operating mode.
Larger-capacity systems, such as the 150-liter Ariston Nuos Plus S2 Wifi, can exceed 1,000 euros. They are designed for high consumption and advertise class A+, with potential savings of up to 80 percent compared with conventional resistance-based systems under certain test conditions. That figure should not be applied directly to a household bill: heat pump performance changes with air temperature and daily demand.
Aerothermal systems require adequate ventilation and can produce a soft sound similar to that of a small refrigerator or extractor fan. They also expel cooler air during operation, a relevant detail if they are installed in a small bathroom or enclosed room. In some models, ducting for air intake and outlet may be optional, but omitting it is not always advisable. The installation must take condensation, noise, accessibility, and water drainage into account.
The investment is more easily recovered in homes with four or more occupants, intensive daily use, and long-term residence in the same property. For someone who uses little hot water, an expensive hybrid system may take too many years to offset the difference compared with a well-programmed 50-liter electric water heater. The highest efficiency does not always correspond to the most cost-effective purchase.
What Wi-Fi control provides and what it cannot solve
Wireless connectivity allows you to turn the water heater on and off and schedule it from your phone. It can also display the temperature, notify you that there is enough water for a shower, and provide approximate consumption data. In a home that is empty during the week, switching the appliance off remotely prevents the tank from being kept hot for several days. Upon returning, the schedule can start heating in advance.
Habit learning is useful when the routine remains stable. If the family always showers in the morning, the water heater can concentrate its operation in the preceding hours and reduce temperature maintenance overnight. When schedules change constantly, the automatic function may make mistakes and leave the water cold or heat it too early. Manual scheduling is usually more efficient than automatic learning in households with irregular shifts.
Remote control is also useful for monitoring abnormal consumption. A sustained increase may indicate a leaking valve, deteriorated insulation, a heating element covered in limescale, or usage that differs from normal. However, the app does not always measure electricity with the accuracy of an independent meter. Its figures may be estimates calculated from operating time and rated power.
Compatibility with Alexa or Google Home is secondary. It allows you to change the temperature by voice, but does not improve insulation or by itself reduce the energy required to heat the water. In addition, connectivity depends on a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network in many appliances and may fail if the water heater is far from the router. Useful intelligence is what prevents unnecessary operating hours, not what adds functions that are difficult to use.
Consumption, temperature, and approximate monthly cost
Heating 100 liters of water from 15 to 60 degrees requires around 5.2 kilowatt-hours, not including tank losses. The figure is obtained from the relationship between volume, temperature difference, and the specific heat of water. In practice, a 100-liter water heater does not necessarily complete this full cycle every day: consumption depends on how much water is drawn and the energy lost while it remains stored.
At an electricity price of 0.20 euros per kilowatt-hour, a full cycle of that size would cost approximately 1.04 euros. If repeated 30 times, the direct energy cost would be around 31 euros per month, before adding heat losses and possible tariff charges. In a home that uses only half the volume, the expense will be lower; in a property with long showers, a bathtub, and a washing machine connected to the hot water supply, it will be higher. Estimates based solely on capacity tend to overstate actual consumption.
Lowering the programmed temperature reduces losses, but it should not be set without considering the manufacturer’s instructions and the equipment’s hygiene requirements. Many appliances include automatic bacteria-prevention cycles that periodically raise the temperature. It is not advisable to disable sanitary protections to save a few cents, especially when water remains stored for long periods.
The tariff also changes the result. If the property has time-of-use pricing, scheduling heating during the cheapest hours can reduce the cost without changing the number of liters consumed. This strategy only works if the equipment retains heat during the period of use. A poorly insulated tank may lose much of the advantage before the shower. Insulation is the silent saving that works even when nobody is looking at the app.
Installation, limescale, and maintenance that protect your investment
The installation must include a safety valve, shut-off valves, suitable connections, and a protected electrical line. The water heater must not be connected to a household power strip or installed on a wall that cannot support its weight. In Spain, electrical work and hydraulic connections should be handled by qualified professionals when the configuration requires it. Poor installation can cause leaks, tripped residual-current devices, or structural damage.
Water hardness affects service life. Limescale builds up on heating elements, valves, and pipes, increases heating time, and can cause dry noises resembling small knocks inside the tank. Sheathed or ceramic heating elements reduce direct contact with water in some models, while bare heating elements are generally more sensitive to mineral accumulation. In hard-water areas, limescale protection should carry as much weight as the energy class.
The magnesium anode is gradually consumed and requires periodic inspection, especially in enameled tanks. Electronic anodes reduce this maintenance, although they do not eliminate the need to inspect the appliance. The frequency depends on water quality and the manufacturer’s instructions; an inspection every two years may be a prudent guideline, but it does not replace the technical manual.
You should also check the safety valve and inspect the tray or floor beneath the appliance. An occasional small discharge may be part of the valve’s normal operation, but continuous dripping points to excessive pressure or a deteriorated component. This outlet must never be blocked to eliminate the water. A small leak can become an expensive fault when it remains hidden behind the water heater.
How to choose without paying for features you do not need
The first filter should be the available space. A traditional vertical water heater usually provides more liters for less money, while a multiposition flat model makes replacement easier in narrow bathrooms and can be installed horizontally. Next, check the exact dimensions, the distance between mounting points, the direction of the connections, and the full weight. Commercial photographs rarely show clearly how far the appliance protrudes from the wall.
The second filter is usage patterns. For one person, 30 liters may be sufficient; for two adults, 50 liters usually offer a reasonable balance; a family of three may consider 80 liters, and four users will probably need 100 liters, especially if showers are concentrated within a short period. The figure changes if there is a bathtub, if hot water supplies the kitchen, or if a second backup system is available. Buying extra liters is not a guarantee of comfort; sometimes it only adds consumption and volume.
The third filter is technology. A connected class B electric water heater may cost between 150 and 300 euros and cover the needs of most homes. A flat Wi-Fi dual-tank model usually rises to between 240 and 380 euros, but solves space and recovery problems. A 100-liter hybrid model costs around 570 euros and may pay off with intensive use. A 150-liter aerothermal system can exceed 1,000 euros and requires more carefully planned installation. The price difference should be compared with the expected years of use and annual consumption.
Finally, check the overall warranty, the specific coverage for the tank, the availability of technical service, and the installation cost. Some product sheets state three years of general warranty and five or seven years for the tank, but the conditions may require inspections or installation by authorized personnel. The price shown by a retailer may not include transportation, removal of the old water heater, mounting brackets, flexible connectors, or labor.
A household decision that makes a difference for years
The best connected water heater is not necessarily the most expensive, the one with the greatest capacity, or the one promising the most striking savings percentage. It is the one that heats the volume actually used, retains the temperature well, and allows its schedules to be adjusted without turning the daily routine into a technical task. For many households, a 50- or 80-liter Wi-Fi model with an ECO function offers the most sensible balance.
A heat pump deserves consideration when consumption is high and the property allows for suitable installation. Flat models are valuable when every centimeter counts. Conventional systems remain competitive if they are programmed sensibly, kept free of limescale, and switched off during extended absences. Technology helps, but the right choice begins by observing how hot water is used.
An electric water heater serves a home for a decade or more, enduring temperature changes, limescale, and hundreds of heating cycles. The purchase does not end when it is mounted on the wall: it continues with programming, inspections, and expenditure monitoring. Over that period, a difference of 50 or 100 euros may be less important than an incorrectly sized tank or an installation that wastes energy every day.
