An electronic fault on a Balay ceramic hob usually appears as a letter, a number combination or a control panel that stops responding. The most common warnings, such as F2, F4, F5, E0111 and U400, do not all mean the same thing: some indicate temporary overheating, while others point to the power supply or a fault requiring professional diagnosis.

If you have a problem with your hob, you can use our free error code finder. From there, you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

What an electronic error indicates on a Balay hob

The electronics control temperature, the power of each zone and the safety of the glass surface. When abnormal values are detected, one or more zones are disconnected to prevent damage. This is why a hob that switches itself off is not always faulty: it may have activated a protection after operating at maximum power for too long.

Code F2 is usually linked to excessive heat in the electronic system or to voltage outside the expected range. F4 appears when the appliance has not cooled down after that initial protection. In both cases, removing the cookware, switching off the hob and allowing it to lose heat is safer than repeatedly trying to turn it on.

Codes F2, F4, F5 and F8: solutions without disassembly

For F2, disconnect the hob at the fuse or relevant switch for about 30 seconds, then reconnect it once the surface and control area are cool. If F4 returns, wait at least 30 minutes before testing again. Do not cover the ventilation openings or use the hob as a rest for hot utensils.

F5, especially when accompanied by a beep, usually means that cookware is heating the touch control panel. Move it away and wait a few seconds. Code F8 normally refers to the maximum operating time of a zone; press a control and set the cooking time again once the appliance has cooled.

When E, dE or U400 appears on the display

An isolated E does not identify a specific fault by itself. Hold the sensor of the zone where it appears for a few seconds so the full code is displayed, then check the documentation for your model. E0111 indicates a possible electronic fault; switching the appliance off and on may clear a temporary incident, but recurring messages should be reported to technical support.

Code dE usually means that Demo mode is active: the hob responds but does not heat. Disconnect it for 30 seconds and press any control surface within the following three minutes. U400 points to an incorrect electrical connection or unsuitable voltage. Do not handle the terminals yourself; an authorised qualified installer should inspect them.

Lock, moisture and ventilation: faults that look electronic

A control panel that does not respond may be locked by the child safety function. With the hob switched off, hold the key or padlock symbol for about four seconds, although the exact procedure can vary by series. Moisture, grease or a cloth resting on the controls can also cause flashing indicators; dry the glass completely before trying again.

The lower ventilation area deserves particular attention on induction models. An overly tight drawer, an oven installed without the specified clearance or several zones running at maximum power can raise the internal temperature and trigger warnings. Clean with a soft cloth when the glass is cool, remove spilled sugar promptly and avoid abrasive pads, salt and sand, which can scratch the surface.

When technical assistance should take over

If the same code returns after a reset, the circuit breaker trips when the hob starts, there is a burning smell or the glass is cracked, disconnect the appliance and stop using it. Power modules and capacitors may retain energy even after the controls are switched off, so taking the hob apart is not a safe household repair.

Recording the exact code, the model shown on the lower label and when the warning appears helps identify the cause without unnecessary testing. A thermal protection may disappear after cooling; a persistent electronics, supply or communication error requires professional measurement. Telling these situations apart prevents blind parts replacement and protects both the worktop and the electrical installation.
