A Balay washing machine may report a problem through a code such as E17 or E18, a faucet icon, a key or a sequence of flashing lights. The symbol does not always mean a serious failure: it often points to a lack of water, a blocked filter or the child lock being enabled.

The exact meaning depends on the model and its generation, so the E-Nr on the appliance rating plate is essential. Even so, Balay appliances from the BSH group share much of the same terminology and allow safe checks before calling a technician.

If you have a problem with your washing machine, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.

The icons that appear most often

The faucet symbol indicates that the machine is not receiving water or that the flow is insufficient. Check that the tap is open, that the inlet hose is not sharply bent and that the small mesh at the connection is free of limescale or sand. If the tap works normally and the warning returns, the inlet valve or flow sensor may be faulty.

The key or padlock, sometimes shown with the letters CL, usually represents the child lock. It is not a fault and does not require panel removal: hold the button shown on the control panel for several seconds, although the combination varies by model. A tub filled with water may indicate that water remains in the drum or that the rinse-hold option is selected.

Warnings E17 and F17 are usually linked to water intake, while E18 and F18 generally point to drainage problems. In the first case, check the tap, hose and inlet filter; in the second, unplug the appliance, place a container beneath the lower cover and clean the pump filter before checking the drain hose.

Error E16 is commonly connected with the door lock and may be caused by clothing caught in the seal or by a worn electrical interlock. In different product families, E02 and F43 are associated with motor problems, worn brushes or electronic communication faults. Since the assignment can vary, do not replace parts based only on a generic table.

On models with automatic dosing, E10, -00, -10 or -20 may appear when the system pump is blocked. E36 can also have several causes, from excessive foam to drainage problems. The manual for the specific model takes priority over any general interpretation, particularly with older washing machines.

What to check before requesting a repair

Turn off the washing machine, unplug it for a few minutes and see whether the warning returns when a program starts. Never open the drain filter while the appliance is connected or without preparing towels, since a considerable amount of water may escape. Remove coins, buttons and lint, then refit the cap without forcing it.

It is also worth checking that the door closes without resistance, that the drum turns freely and that the load has not formed a heavy ball. A single wet towel can cause a spin-cycle imbalance without any visible code. Too much detergent creates foam and disrupts the cycle, especially in areas with soft water.

Some signs require you to stop using the appliance: a burning smell, smoke, sparks, a substantial leak or a locked drum. In those situations, cut the power and leave the inspection to a professional. Recording the code, the E-Nr model number and the exact moment it appears makes diagnosis more accurate and helps avoid replacing unnecessary components.
