How to fix the E18 error code on a Balay washing machine
The E18 error usually comes from a blocked drain. Learn how to check the filter, hose and pump safely.

The appearance of the E18 or F18 code on a Balay washing machine means that the appliance cannot drain the water from the drum. The program stops to prevent the motor from continuing to work while the drainage circuit is blocked. In most cases, the cause is a filter full of lint, coins or other small objects, although the hose or pump may also be affected.
If you have a problem with your washing machine, you can use our free error code finder. From there you can identify and solve all errors easily and effectively.
What the E18 error means on a Balay washing machine
The warning appears when the electronics detect that the water level has not fallen as it should during draining. This is why the clothes may remain soaked, water may collect in the tub or the door may stay locked when the cycle ends. It is not a water inlet fault, but an issue during the drainage and spin stage.
Balay may display E18 or F18 depending on the series and control system fitted. The practical meaning is the same: the route followed by the water from the drum to the waste pipe must be checked. Before removing any component, unplug the washing machine and close the water tap.
The most common causes of the blockage
The pump filter, normally located behind a cover at the lower front, is the first point to inspect. Fibres, buttons, clips, coins and fabric remnants collect there. When dirt forms a compact mass, the pump may hum without moving water or remain completely still.
The drain hose may also be blocked or kinked. It must not be crushed against the wall, and the connection must follow the installation instructions for the model; as a general reference, the outlet should not be more than one metre high. An incorrectly fitted extension can make water flow back and trigger the warning.
If the filter and hose are clear, the problem may lie in the pump itself, the wiring or the pressure switch, a component that reports the water level. In these cases, a superficial cleaning will not clear the code and a technical inspection is advisable, particularly if there are leaks, a burning smell or metallic noises.
How to check the washing machine without worsening the fault
To drain the remaining water, place towels and a container under the filter cover. Open it slowly because a considerable amount of water may escape, and use the emergency drain hose if your model has one. Then turn the filter carefully, remove it and clear away the debris; also check that the small internal impeller can move without sticking.
Inspect the hose from the rear of the machine to the household drain. It should be free of kinks and visible blockages. Once the circuit is clean, refit the filter firmly, reconnect the appliance and run a short drain or spin program without laundry. Do not force the door while water remains inside, as this could damage the lock or cause flooding.
A reset may clear the warning if the blockage was temporary, but it will not repair a worn pump. If E18 returns after cleaning, the pump does not turn, water remains in the drum or the appliance always stops at the same point, stop using it. Handling electrical connections while the machine is plugged in creates an unnecessary risk.
Which part your Balay model may need
The most common replacement is the drain pump, although changing it without confirming the diagnosis can create unnecessary expense. Compatibility depends on the E-Nr number, usually shown on a label inside the door frame, at the rear or beside the rating plate. The external appearance of two similar pumps does not guarantee that they are interchangeable.
The pressure switch, hose and wiring can also cause similar symptoms. A technician can test the pump, check whether it receives power and verify that the sensor correctly detects draining. This check is particularly useful when the error appears intermittently or coincides with an unusually noisy spin cycle.
When cleaning is no longer enough
The E18 error is often resolved by removing an object from the filter or straightening a kinked hose, but it is not always a household repair. Water beneath the machine, a hot plastic smell, sparks, grinding noises or the immediate return of the code indicate a fault that needs diagnosis.
An orderly inspection avoids replacing parts blindly and helps distinguish a simple blockage from a pump or sensor failure. On a Balay washing machine, checking the drainage system first is the most logical route: retained water not only prevents spinning, it also keeps the door locked and can turn a minor incident into more serious damage.
